Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why should I encourage my clients to give through the Tax Checkoff?
  2. Tax Checkoff is a simple way to make a difference for our state. A gift will mean expansion of services for Colorado's families, children and disabled citizens; conservation of wildlife and wetlands; and increased protection for domestic animals. The 10 organizations listed are all private nonprofit charities or compelling causes within public agencies. In today's world of scarce resources and rising needs, Colorado charities see the Tax Checkoff as a cost effective way to raise needed funds.

  3. How does a taxpayer make a gift?
  4. Taxpayers can give to some or all of these charitable causes by simply indicating that on their tax returns. The gift can either be from a tax refund or can be added to the taxpayer's payment. Gifts are voluntary contributions, not designations of tax dollars.

  5. How are organizations selected to participate in the Checkoff?
  6. To be listed on Colorado's Tax Checkoff, each organization has come through a rigorous legislative process and has been approved by the Colorado State Legislature. Each organization is listed as a participant by state statute. Particpation in the Tax Checkoff is often limited to three years before an organization comes before the legislature for renewal.
